If you want the full on rock/metal sound go for Made Of Metal or Metal Machine. They have quite a large range of kit styles and the base product comes with 2 kits recorded at Mark Knopflers Grove Studios. It even has a built in pattern sequencer to quickly sketch a song up in and you can drag the patterns into a midi lane for reuse. It has tons of MIDI loops and a built in search facility to select them by timescale, style etc and as they are MIDI you can re-edit them if needed or use them as starting points. But I've had trouble at times with BFD3 as well. BFD3 is a deeper concept and, to my ears, more fulfilling as the sounds are a bit less produced and you can sculpt them - aka takes more time.

I find to 'get them to sit in a mix' is more about choosing the right kit versus adding plugins to get the right sound-like when I'm using BFD3.
